January 30, 2006 Celebrating the Holidays This time of year is so much fun! We¡¯re barely finished celebrating Christmas and the next thing you know we¡¯re right in the middle Chinese New Year. No sooner are we done trimming trees, making cookies, opening presents and building gingerbread houses we find ourselves decorating for spring festival (Chinese New Year), making dumplings (the traditional Chinese New Year¡¯s food), having parties with foster families and of course it just would not be complete without setting off fireworks! In Tacheng (northwest Xinjiang province) there are currently 955 orphans in need of care. Many of these are disabled. Currently 46 are being looked after in an elderly care facility. In conjunction with the local government we are helping to renovate a facility and provide training for staff that will provide care for these orphans. In Hohot (Inner Mongolia) we have begun a project to provide formula for needy orphans who currently do not have access to it. The Hohot orphanage currently has more than 30 children under the age of one who will benefit from this program. We will distribute the formula, train the staff and monitor the children¡¯s progress. Providing these children with formula will go a long way to improving their health and give them a good chance of survival. After his most recent doctor¡¯s visit, a miracle is the only word we can find to explain Abel¡¯s current condition. He had been in and out of the hospital for three months. He had an enlarged heart, irregular heart beat, congenital heat disease, pneumonia and needed heart surgery. Today the doctors tell us his heart is normal size, pumping properly and he no longer will need surgery. We welcome new arrivals, Alex, Jeff and Kimberly. They are all precious and have their own unique story. We feel this is the year of special favor and blessing for the children. Our prayer for you is that you would be abundantly blessed as well!
