Summertime means watermelons, and Daxing District (our area of Beijing) is well-known for its excellent watermelons. So, today we took our kids to a fruit stand so that they could experience first-hand the fun of finding the perfect watermelon. The morning was a big success, with lots of yummy, juicy snacks, and a fun learning experience... there were only a couple of dropped watermelons!

Like our matching hats?
Ben climbs in the car.
Luke likes the ride.
At the fruit stand.
This pumpkin is as big as Julia!
Cheryl can almost
climb on top.
This would make an amazing Cinderella Carriage, wouldn't it Julia?
The fruit stand owner cuts slices of watermelon for everyone.
Savannah and Julia watch carefully
Our hats look like
watermelon slices!
Julia thinks about
taking a big bit...
And then it's gone
in one mouthful!
Luke enjoys his slice.
Don't eat the rind, Ben!
Yum! Watermelon and summer go hand in hand.
Is that a seed on
your cheek, Cheryl?
This is a great snack.
Do you think we could eat a field full of watermelons?
The tomato vines are twice as tall as us!
Savannah finds the ripe tomatos.
Julia reaches way into the bush for a ripe tomato.
Julia counting her tomatos.
I have 5!
My shirt makes a great basket.

Luke finds a ripe tomato.
Can I pick the green ones?
Peering underneath
the greenhouse.
Walking down the rows of the watermelon patch.
Emily spots one.
Ben is such a strong boy!
Savannah found a perfectly sized melon.
Don't throw it, Emily!
Luke carefully selects his watermelon.
Cheryl picks one out.
Julia goes back to using her shirt as a basket.
Everyone has their own watermelon.
So that's what it looks like inside!
Yum! Cheryl enjoys her watermelon.
Wow... this is a great day! Lots and lots of watermelon snacks!
Our two "twins," Julia and Savannah.
Savannah's a great helper.
All lined up and ready to go.
Time for one last snack... in case we
haven't had enough already!
Wow, that's a carload of kids and melons!
From all the happy smiles,
we can tell that clearly
it was a wonderful day.
The melon is almost as big
as Savannah, but she
finally managed to pick it up!
The fruit stand owner (pictured in the center) donated all of the melons to us! Thank you!
