A wise teacher yearns beyond the small world of a classroom to create for her students an occasion to discover mystery and meaning. Coming to China to serve others makes that possibility considerably more likely. Serving as English teachers or as care-givers to special needs infants and toddlers at New Day, the excitement is palpable. In a place where few syllables sound familiar, hearts transcend all barriers.

The New Day Experience

Yang Family | Cheng Family | Liu Family

The Yang family became part of our Pearl Project in June 2006. Yang Fuchang worked as a farmer until he was diagnosed with heart disease. He received surgery, but his weakened heart still keeps him from being able to work. His wife Dou Xuefen came to work for New Day in October 2006. Her health is not strong, but she can still do some light work on a part time basis. She began by working part time as a prep cook and cleaner in our dining hall. In May 2009, she transitioned into working 20 hours a week cleaning our volunteer apartments.

Yang Chen is their son. He’s in high school and is an excellent student. Recently, his principal began purchasing all his school books for him because he noticed that Chen would set aside his lunch money every day to save for more books. The principal often tells his parents that he is a very bright young man and has a strong academic future.

Since 2006, many generous individuals and volunteer groups have helped the Yang family by supplying funds for Fuchang’s medical expenses and Chen’s schooling costs. Groups have also supplied coal, rice, and oil to help cover their daily living costs.

Needs:

  • School Tuition for Chen – 9,000 RMB ($1,343) per year
  • Monthly prescriptions for Fuchang (heart disease) – 300 RMB ($45) per month
  • Coal for heating and daily cooking – 2,500 RMB ($375) per year
  • Ceiling and roof repairs in kitchen – 8,000 RMB ($1,200) (estimate)
  • Daily supplies (rice, eggs, oil, etc.) – 300 RMB ($45) per month
